National Post buying sponsored ads on Facebook

The National Post in Canada is now paying Facebook to run sponsored ads like the following. Are they struggling to attract readers with their current content or is this a new trend?

Is it related to the recent federal budget providing up to $660M per year in funding for journalism? How will this affect freedom of the press?
